Adults who are struggling to hear in background noise at home and at work should have their processing abilities tested. The audiologist will evaluate the patient’s ability to complete a variety of auditory tasks. This allows different words and sentences to be presented simultaneously to the two ears. The testing is conducted with a sound booth and a two-channel audiometer. Only an audiologist can diagnose an auditory processing disorder. This allows them to finally receive the help that they need. Our audiologist has been the one to give a correct diagnosis to a family that had been struggling for answers. An audiologist is the ideal professional to test for auditory processing disorder. It’s common for central auditory processing disorder to be misdiagnosed as hearing loss, a language disorder, a learning disorder, an attention disorder, or another similar problem. ![]() It’s also possible to have both hearing loss and a central auditory processing disorder this is more common in older adults. Many patients are diagnosed as children, but it’s also possible for adults to acquire an auditory processing disorder, usually as the result of an accident or stroke. This can create increased stress while in group social settings, and may also affect work or school performance. The presence of background noise creates particular challenges for them. Test results for both types of tests are compared to normative data and a profile evolves telling us which communication skills and auditory neural function(s) are normal or abnormal for a given age. ![]() These include certain disease processes such a multiple sclerosis, vascular disease, strokes, hearing injuries and tumors can cause a significant reduction in the ability to process sound. Adults with auditory complaints (yet have normal hearing) can more frequently have known etiologies to their abnormalities. Specific causes related to injury or disease in children are rare. Under consideration as well is the possibility of subtle structural and/or biochemical differences in the brain which may cause a more disorganized neural relay system. We suspect delays are associated with subtle neurologic maturational delays. We do know that APD does sometimes run in families.
